Grenada, the island of Spice

The day dawned bright and clear, and when I opened my curtain this is what I saw.

I think we must have docked someplace! Looks nice so far! We had a nice breakfast and then met up with Pam and Michael about 10am to get off the ship. It's very impressive when you are on the dock!

We are the only ship in port today, so we decided to find a cab driver to give us a little island tour. For the bargain price of $20 per person, we had about a 4 hour tour to the waterfall, spice plants, the fort, the college and a beautiful beach.

Grenada is known as the Spice Island, and the largest export is actually nutmeg! They also produce cocoa, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, tumeric and mace. All done very locally. We saw all the plants (did you know nutmeg is actually a fruit, and the nutmeg is the seed in the middle? Also, that mace is a part of the nutmeg seed as well? didn't think so, I didn't either until today!)

The waterfall was very pretty, and you can donate to the local cliff divers and they'll go and jump off the cliff for you to take a photo of. Better them than me I guess, and our cliff diver was named Ricky. I've got some video I'll try to post later, I don't know if it will work. But he dived off the cliff after making sure I had my camera working, so that was good!

We then headed back towards town and the Fort, which is overlooking the harbor. It's in pretty decent repair, and not very large, so didn't take to long to walk around.

A nice panoramic shot, with the ship in the middle.

Our local guide Alice from the fort, who gave us some interesting information.

We then drove over to the college, which is where the US Marines landed in 1983 when we invaded Grenada to prevent a coup. Its quite large, and has one of the largest veterinary schools in the area here. Lots of US students.

The beach was BEAUTIFUL, and I was only sorry I didn't have my bathing suit. I think this is where we will head directly for next time.

We headed back to the port, and stopped and did a bit of souvenir shopping before we headed back to the ship. By this point it was VERY hot, and we were glad to get back to our rooms. As we boarded, the specialty restaurants had a station set up to book times, and since we didn't have anything scheduled for dinner this evening (and were still annoyed with the main dining room from last night) we decided to book Qsine for dinner, which is a sort-of tapas place, but a lot more upscale. Should be a fun evening to say the least!!!
